I want to write a few words about rendering bc I want to talk about it with İrem. These broken images - these unrendered, or half-rendered images, are the ultimate orphaned images. No one thinks about them anymore once they come into focus. Rendering simultaneously means to convey, to enact, to cause, to process an image, and to boil fat off bones. I am not a machine, but with my hand doing its thing and my brain plugged into this, I feel like an agent of all those things. Where the form and the color become another is the hardest. It’s not an equation that is for me to solve, but some primordial part of my eye and brain developed by nature to give me a hunting advantage, perhaps. The mechanism is older than thought.
If you are traveling by domestic ferry lines in Istanbul, you already know that the internet connection sucks. The artist taking up the second slot at 400x118, Zeynep Beler, knows this very well. During her commute by ferry, from her studio in the city to her home on the Princes’ Islands, she spends time scrolling through her social media feed, but a poor internet performance comes into play and results in blurry placeholder images. We are sorry you’re having trouble downloading an image! The image download has failed! No, it has not! Because I am an artist, and artists accept that what is found is not necessarily what was being looked for. Because I know that being an artist means being open to possibilities and failures. Zeynep takes screenshots of her cell phone’s screen and uses the blurry images as a source for her new series of paintings. During my conversation with Zeynep at Ziba Pub, I realized that, while rendering the blurry images into painting, she sees her hand as a separate tool almost detached from her body. She trusts her hand and the hand in turn remains at her disposal. ‘Rendering the blurry images into painting.’’ What a peculiar way of depicting an event, right? To render has many meanings such as to provide, give, translate, deliver, make, play, perform, process, melt down, represent, hand over, depict, cover etc. For this series of works, she seems to have placed ‘’render’’ between herself as a painter and the very painting medium. To put it simply, the painting as the action is replaced by the verb ‘render’, but the painting as the result of the action remains intact. I guess this is why I particularly like these rendered paintings. To me they are impure. They are half blood. They are conceptual. Unlike the artists who spend more time on preparation/pre-production than the production, Zeynep doesn’t compose her subject on a fully conscious level. Nor is she an artist particularly adamant about Mise en Place. She is not interested in measuring all of the ingredients and setting out them in bowls so she can use them at the right time, so to speak. While working one must either know what one’s doing like the back of their hand or one must have already accepted unanticipated interruptions that may cause delicate batter to deflate, chocolate to overheat, and custard to curdle. I’d guess the latter is the case with Zeynep. Imagine what she could do with overheated chocolate and the curdled custard!

Rendering hakkında birkaç kelime yazmak istiyorum çünkü İrem ile bu konuda konuşmak istiyorum. Bu bozuk imgeler - bu işlenmemiş veya yarı işlenmiş görüntüler, tam anlamıyla yetim imge denen şeydir. Görsel yüklendi mi o halini artık kimse düşünmez. “Render” etmek, aynı anda hem aktarmak, hem canlandırmak, hem sebep olmak, hem görsel bilgi işlemek, hem de yağı kemiklerden ayırana kadar haşlamak anlamına geliyor. Ben makine değilim, ama elim işini yaparken ve beynim buna odaklanmış haldeyken, kendimi tüm bunların bir temsilcisi gibi hissediyorum. En zor kısım, form ve rengin birbirine dönüştüğü alanlar. Bu benim çözmem gereken bir denklem değil, gözümün ve beynimin ilkel bir parçası, belki de avlanırken avantaj olsun diye doğanın geliştirdiği bir şey. Düşünceden daha eski bir mekanizma.
İstanbul'da iç hat vapuruyla seyahat ediyorsanız internet bağlantısının yer yer berbat olduğunu biliyorsunuzdur. 400x118'in ikinci sergisinde yer alan sanatçı Zeynep Beler bunu çok iyi biliyor. Zeynep, şehirdeki atölyesinden Adalar'daki evine vapurla gidip gelirken, sosyal medya akışında gezinmek istediğinde zayıf internet bağlantısı sebebiyle, bulanık, ne idüğü belirsiz görüntülerle karşılaşır. Görseli indirirken sorun yaşadığınız için üzgünüz! Resim indirme işlemi başarısız oldu! Hayır, olmadı! Çünkü ben bir sanatçıyım ve sanatçılar, bulunan şeyin her zaman aranan şey olmayabileceğini kabul eder. Çünkü biliyorum ki sanatçı olmak olasılıklara ve başarısızlıklara açık olmak demektir. Zeynep telefonunun ekran görüntülerini alıyor ve bu bulanık görüntüleri yeni resim serisi için kaynak olarak kullanıyor. Zeynep'le Ziba Pub'da sohbet ederken, bulanık görüntüleri resmetme sürecinde elini neredeyse bedeninden kopuk ayrı bir araç olarak gördüğünü fark ettim. Eline güveniyor ve karşılığında eli de onun emrine amade. "Bulanık görüntüleri resmetmek.” Ne kadar garip bir tasvir şekli, öyle değil mi? “Render” etmek, sağlamak, vermek, tercüme etmek, teslim etmek, yapmak, canlandırmak, gerçekleştirmek, işlemek, eritmek, temsil etmek, tasvir etmek, örtmek gibi birçok anlama geliyor. Bu serideki çalışmalarında, bir ressam olarak kendisi ile resim aracı arasına “render" eylemini yerleştirmiş gibi görünüyor. Basitçe söylemek gerekirse, eylem olarak resmin yerini 'render' fiili alıyor, ancak eylemin sonucu olarak resim olduğu gibi kalıyor. Sanırım bu yüzden bu işlenmiş resimleri özellikle seviyorum. Benim için saf değil, kanı bozuklar. Kavramsallar. Üretimden çok hazırlığa/ön üretime zaman harcayan sanatçıların aksine Zeynep, konusunu tamamen bilinçli bir düzeyde oluşturmuyor. Mise en Place konusunda ısrarlı bir sanatçı değil. Tabiri caizse, tüm malzemeleri ölçüp doğru zamanda kullanabilmek için teker teker kaplara yerleştirmekle ilgilenmiyor. İnsan çalışırken ya ne yaptığını avucunun içi gibi bilmeli ya da hamurun sönmesine, çikolatanın yanmasına ve glazürün kesilmesine neden olabilecek beklenmedik arızaları önceden kabullenmiş olmalıdır. Zeynep'in durumunun, bunlardan ikincisi olduğunu sanıyorum. Yanmış çikolata ve kesilmiş glazür ile neler yapabileceğini artık siz hayal edin!
